Taste Of Spring

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Taste Of Spring

The last couple of days have been absolutely beautiful, more like perfect spring weather. I doubt we’ve seen the last of winter just yet, but today I relished the chance to forgo some of the extra layers and keep things really simple. I even spent a bit of time sans cardigan today, soaking up the glorious sunshine. So good.

A Favourite Combo

I’ve paired this scarf and striped top before, but I just couldn’t resist doing it again – I love the way the patterns play off each other. I also just realised that almost every time I wear this black-and-white striped top I choose black-and-white shoes to go with it, can’t help myself apparently!

Green Necklace

Today I wore my new green necklace, a gift from my parents-in-law for my birthday. My first thought was “it’s a lovely necklace, but what would I do with it?”. Green isn’t a colour I wear very often so I’m less confident working with it – I went for a safe pairing today with this navy/green print top.

A quick look through my wardrobe convinced me I definitely have a few items I can pair this necklace with – obviously this navy/green top, plus a couple of floral print tops and my green skirt. And there’s always neutrals to fall back on, which for me is mainly white, navy and black. I guess that’s pretty good for a start, and I hope to find some less obvious combinations down the track.

Reuse

I don’t buy new clothes every month, so most of the time I’m trying to find new ways to mix-and-match what I’ve got. Every now and then I have a little breakthrough, where I discover a combination I hadn’t expected or a new way to style something. More often (unfortunately) I’m just reusing old ideas – like today. Elements from earlier outfits mashed together into a new one.

Possibly you might call this cheating, but I call it “functional”. My aim is not to have an enormous wardrobe, nor a “fashionable” one, but a wardrobe where all the items work neatly together to create almost-endless combinations. Because THEN no matter how behind the laundry is, or how much I’m lacking inspiration, it will still be easy to pull together an outfit.

Burgundy Surprise

So far I’ve felt a little restricted with this burgundy cardigan – it’s not a colour I generally wear and I’ve struggled to find tops to pair with it. So far I’ve only worn black (or black and white) tops with it, but today I discovered it complements my floral top nicely. Which in a way shouldn’t be a surprise as it’s one of the most versatile tops I own; there’s not much it doesn’t work with.

The best thing about this development is that it opens my mind to all sorts of possibilities. After all, if burgundy looks great with this floral print, maybe it will look great with any of the colours found inside the print. Burgundy with pink? Navy? Green? Purple? Let the experimenting begin!
