Today marks the end of June’s Style Dare with “my style mantra”. I don’t have a style mantra as such, but got to thinking about the main factor that influences my outfit choices. It comes down to this: colour. The right colour brightens my complexion, and more importantly my mood.
Since embarking on this blog and overhauling my wardrobe, I’ve collected items almost every colour of the rainbow – not yellow (yet), and orange is pretty scarce. But reds, pinks, greens, blues, purples – in various cheery shades. Used in monochromatic looks, mixed with neutrals, or boldly paired together. Some days I’ll go for more subdued combinations just for a change or to suit my mood, but generally I’ll use colour to express my personality in my outfits.
(And because I was too busy having a fun time with my in-laws yesterday to post an outfit, here’s some bonus pictures from yesterday.)
Today’s “curly” style dare was less a challenge than an excuse to wear my hair like I always do. So to make up for it I did something I never thought I would EVER do – denim on denim.
I didn’t set out to do it – I was originally wearing a grey blazer, but it didn’t suit my mood today and out of the blue it occurred to me my denim jacket might look okay. I tried it on and actually didn’t mind the look, so it stayed.
So how did I manage to convince myself that denim on denim was acceptable? Well I guess one reason is that having read a lot of style blogs over the last year I’ve gotten a bit used to the idea! On top of that: I’m wearing a long top which breaks up the denim, they are different but complementary shades of blue (ideally I’d like slightly more contrast I think), and I’ve added a colourful scarf to offer some visual relief. I don’t imagine this will become a staple look for me, but it’s so interesting to find myself trying things I had never have expected to.
Today’s Style Dare was “silk scarf”. I’m pretty sure it isn’t actually made of silk, but I’m calling it close enough! This scarf is very cute with its tiny elephants, but I haven’t worn it for ages as it’s really only for decoration and doesn’t offer any warmth. I really love some of the looks that can be created with small scarves like this one – worn as a headband, or in a cute bow at the top of the neck – but unfortunately I haven’t managed to make any of these work for me so far.
Today’s Style Dare was “fresh face”, otherwise known as no-makeup-day. I did fail this challenge today – while for a lot of people Sunday is a super relaxed day, for me it means going to church which most weeks is my only occasion for dressing up a little. So I did wear makeup today, but I don’t feel too bad as I accidentally did go completely without only a few days ago.
No side shot today – I am really struggling to get shots taken during the winter time, and when good lighting opportunities in the day are so limited it’s much more tricky to make outfit pictures happen. Plus we were running late so I barely had time to get any photos before running out the door.
Because I know you can’t really see much from the picture, I’m wearing my cobalt blue dress with a teal blazer and scarf over the top. I layered a long-sleeved black top under the dress, and added my wide black waist belt (like this). My scarf has cobalt and teal colours through it, see here for a close up.
Today’s style dare: Wonder Woman. That’s a tough one! I went for a wonder woman colour scheme, red and blue (with some specks of yellow through my scarf in lieu of gold). And I did feel a bit Wonder-Womanish earlier today – after working until midnight last night I was managing to exercise a lot of patience with a highly emotional Little Miss H. Alas, after returning from a visit to the local park there appeared a distinctly un-Wonder-Womanish twinge in my back, leaving me sore and moving gingerly the rest of the day. Here’s hoping it wakes up fine tomorrow morning!
