When I pulled out this skirt and top it did not immediately set off alarm bells – “watch out, that’s a floral top you’re pairing with that spotty skirt!”. I’m guessing that means one of two things – either I’ve become completely desensitised to pattern mixing after following so many blogs the last 12 months, or these items work together beautifully well.
Possibly a mixture of the two.
I caught the cold my girls had and it was a good one. On Sunday it hit me hard – my brain turned to mush and I was forgetting and misreading and misunderstanding all over the place! Thankfully we are all on the mend now, which is just as well because my Mum is coming to visit today. Of course mums are awesome when you’re sick as well, but I only see mine a few times a year so I’d rather spend the time hanging out and chatting than being nursed.
Wearing multiple jacket layers (cardigan plus denim jacket in this case) is something that had just never occurred to me before I entered the world of blogging, but it’s a great way to add some colour and warmth to an outfit. Today’s outfit is still quite simple – it certainly has space for a necklace or scarf, but I tend to gravitate towards more basic outfits when I’m under the weather.
Linking up with Kiwi Womens Style for Wardrobe Wednesday.
Today’s Style Dare was “a new hairstyle”. I think this technically is a new hairstyle – a slight variation on the twist-and-pin that made its debut last time I participated in this dare. (Somewhat worryingly, the last time I did this dare I also wore a very similar outfit.)
After being cooped up all week with sick kids, I managed to escape the house on Saturday for a little time to myself (leaving the very capable Mr Q in charge). I bought a couple of things from Target – they have quite an impressive sale on at the moment – including this top at half price. It was 40% off, but then one of the button loops wasn’t stitched in properly so I got a few extra dollars off to compensate for the 90 seconds I’d have to spend mending it. Sure it was only about $4, but hey if I got paid that much for EVERY 90 seconds of my day I’d be doing very well indeed.
Speaking of getting paid, today was my first day of paid employment in four years (since going on maternity leave with Little Miss H). What with the challenge of getting the girls ready for their first time at daycare, guilt at abandoning my sobbing toddler (she settled in fine), the strangeness of being in a completely quiet house, and the having to WORK – I was a little scatterbrained. I don’t usually wear very much makeup, but I didn’t even realise until halfway through taking pictures that today I completely forgot to even put on a little mascara. So if I’m looking slightly paler and more tired than normal – that would be why.
And the same goes for my interesting but comfortable choice of footwear.

The pink cardigan over a soft shirt with a bow seemed a bit too feminine for me at first, but then simple jeans and casual shoes balanced out the outfit to something that fits more comfortably in my style. Whatever my style is! I don’t know that I could easily put it into words just yet, but I’m definitely getting a clearer picture.
I had no idea until I stepped outside to take photos that my cardigan was completely unnecessary today. Who would have expected such a warm sunny day this far through autumn? Which prompted me to check out the weather forecast, and turns out there’s another one happening tomorrow. Stay tuned for a last-chance summery outfit!
