Yesterday’s outfit had a tough brief to fulfil. It had to be suitable for: an appointment to sign an important contract, some furniture shopping, and many hours of sorting through old, dusty items from my Nan’s house. Of course, I could have bought a change of clothes. But when you get right down to it I just couldn’t be bothered.
Instead I chose a skirt (to look presentable for my appointment), but made sure everything was easily washable. And along with the skirt, my fleece-lined tights which I love – not only are they beautifully warm, but they are very thick so while busy clearing out the house I didn’t have to worry about accidentally flashing my underwear. Even with our crazy spring weather right now (from gale winds to hail to sunshine all in a day), I didn’t once get too cold or too hot, and was comfortable all the way until 11pm when we called it a day.

Today’s style dare challenge was to wear a hat. And I do find hats a bit of a challenge. It’s not that I don’t like them – I think people who wear hats well look incredibly stylish – but I’m not convinced I’m one of those people. As much as I’d love to be able to rock a straw trilby or look sophisticated in a beret, today I’m going for “cosy in a beanie”.
The thing about hats is that they are super sneaky. You put one on, it immediately ruins your hair (if it was half decent to begin with), thus leaving you trapped to wear it for the rest of the day. That’s one impressive survival mechanism right there!
Today I discovered my cropped burgundy cardigan goes with this printed skirt. I should hardly be surprised. This skirt goes with almost everything I own, which of course is why I love it so much. And it turns out a cropped cardigan is actually the perfect length for a skirt sitting at your waistline (previously I’ve only paired it with pants).
(Apologies for the pictures. I struggled with the lighting during the scraps of time I had to take photos today.)
I was really happy with this outfit today – it ticked some good boxes (comfortable, colourful, weather-appropriate). And while I wouldn’t say it used all my favourite items of clothing, it did consist entirely of almost favourite items. And I loved the result.
So I finally got a haircut – my hairdresser has an excellent memory and reminded me it’s been seven months since my last trim. Oops. She also remembered to point out that I have more grey hairs than last time. Ha, thanks! I am far too lazy to colour my hair – that would involve frequent touch-ups, so for the moment at least I will continue to be in denial!
Today we had planned to go to an Anzac Day commemorative service, but as we are still waiting for Tiny Miss P to completely recover we settled for making Anzac biscuits instead. Thank you to all the men, women and their families who had to give up so much to preserve our freedom, and also to those currently serving our country.
It felt a bit strange going without sleeves today as it wasn’t that warm, but I didn’t feel the cold due to these tights. During a recent supermarket run I stumbled across some fleece-lined black tights that were on sale. I hadn’t known they existed until reading about them on northern hemisphere blogs during their recent winter season, but everybody seemed to be raving about them so I thought it was worth a try. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to give them a real test on a freezing cold day, but they were so comfortable and toasty today so there’s definitely real potential.

Today I felt a little busy.
Not in the rushing-around-doing-stuff kind of way, in fact quite the opposite. Little Miss H has a nasty virus at the moment so we’re pretty much quarantined at home for the next day or two. Busy in the pattern-mixing-outfit kind of way. Here I’ve got a striped top with a printed skirt and two-toned shoes.
I think it works well actually, mostly because there’s a lot of familiar black and white featured. I don’t think I’d start messing around with clashing colours while mixing printed pieces as that would possibly be too much. (But don’t hold me to that.)
