Reflect: Blogiversary

A little over a year ago I noticed a couple of my friends (also with young children) always looked great – they didn’t necessarily have a lot of new clothes, but somehow knew how to put them together to make the best of everything. I was a little ashamed of my own efforts, most often old jeans with a maternity hoodie – despite the fact I hadn’t been pregnant for at least 6 months. I wondered if the ability to create great looking outfits was something you were born with, or if it could be learnt.

On the off-chance that I too could learn how to put together simple but stylish outfits on a limited budget I set off on my quest for a functional wardrobe. And here I am, one year on, 288 outfits later, struggling to whittle down my favourites into a manageable number for a summary blog post!

Here is a selection of my favourite outfits from the last year. These are the ones I want to wear again and again, the ones I feel best represent me and my style at this point in time.

Favourites

I’d love to think my style journey has been helpful or interesting to other people, but even if not I’ve learnt so many new things that have really made it easier for me to get dressed in the morning and make the most of the clothes I’ve got. I’m going to call this little experiment a success so far, and continue on!

Reflect: August

With the end of August comes the end of winter, and this year spring has been particularly enthusiastic with already a couple of short-sleeve-weather days. I may have to wait until next year to improve my layering skills, but in the meantime let’s have a look at August’s outfits.

Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Spring In The AirI loved this one, a big soft scarf over a short-sleeved top. Something about the proportions and colours of this just really appeals to me.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Tights TimeThis outfit was part of my recent effort to get more wear out of my burgundy cardigan, and I really liked the result.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Purple And NavyI love this navy and purple combination, it kind of softens the brightness of the purple. Not that the brightness worries me, but it’s a nice change.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Pattern FriendsStriking yet pretty. This one felt a bit outside my comfort zone, but when I see the photo I like it more and more.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - BehindThis is the type of outfit I like to wear most of the time – some jeans, a top and blazer. Nothing fussy, but still looks like I’ve taken some care to present myself well.

Least Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Not SuitedI don’t think this is a particularly bad outfit, it’s just not the right style for me at the moment.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Not Enough HoursI’m pretty sure this outfit looked better in the mirror than in the photograph! I don’t have a particular problem with the colours, more that it just looks a bit sloppy. A large part of this is my cobalt jeans are a little loose on me now – a correctly fitting item makes all the difference.

Reflect: July

Less outfits to choose from this month which made my recap job a bit more difficult! I’ve taken the pressure off myself to post an outfit every day and have happily settled into posting 3-4 times a week, which I think is much more maintainable.

I was hoping that by the time I got this far though winter I’d be much more comfortable with layering, but honestly I still struggle with it creatively. I’m envying all the wonderful northern hemisphere bloggers in their cute summer outfits!

Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - A Favourite ComboI just love this outfit – it feels completely ME.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Make DoI’m particularly appreciating outfits with dresses or skirts at the moment – when it’s cold and miserable it so often seems easier to wear pants.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Thirty OneUnfortunately this is a really poor quality picture – it was around midday but really dark. But I did really love the combination of teal blazer, purple jeans and navy top.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Green NecklaceNothing too crazy going on here, just a nicely balanced outfit.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Red And LeopardSomehow the leopard print scarf manages to make my red jumper more… RED! Gotta love that.

Least Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - RecoveringIt’s not terrible, but it’s missing something – a scarf or necklace would have made a big difference. Easy fixed!
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - ReuseI don’t mind this one, but I just don’t like it as much as I expected to. I remember at the time liking the outfit more without the jacket, but it was far too cold for short sleeves.

Reflect: June

So that was June. I signed up to take part in the June edition of the Fox In Flats Style Dare, but my performance was less than spectacular! When I counted up the number of dares I actually completed is was exactly half – far less than I had expected. It unfortunately turned into a really busy month for me and my motivation kept dipping.

All the same, I did manage to finish off the month and tried a few things I wouldn’t have otherwise. My favourite discovery was probably leopard print – I’m now cautiously venturing into the world of animal print.

Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Purple SurpriseThis outfit is definitely one of my favourites since I started this blog. I love how the colours and textures play off each other, to me it has great balance and really represents my style.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Leopard Print DareLeopard print. Not something that has ever appealed to me before, but for the sake of science – I mean a dare – I gave it a shot. And you know what, maybe it’s not so bad after all. It kind of DOES go with everything, just like I’ve been told over and over.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Bright Eyes DareTo me this colour combination is very soothing, and the overall outfit is both comfortable and stylish.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - My Style Mantra DareI guess purple is flavour of the month for me! Can’t get enough.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Sassy Pants DareThis was my first go at buttoning my shirt all the way to the top, and I really liked this look.

Least Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Coloured Tights DareThese teal tights have proven impossible for me to style – this was the best I could come up with, but I just can’t find a way for them to not take over the entire outfit.
Quest for a functional Wardrobe - Royal DareToo many colours, a little disjointed.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Sparkles DareAgain, I think this outfit is lacking cohesion.

Reflect: May

Today I’m looking back over the month of May, to see what worked and what didn’t. I’m pretty pleased with the result actually – while there weren’t many outfits I really loved, there were none that I strongly disliked. Even my list of least-favourite outfits below – while they wouldn’t be my first choice, should our laundry situation back me into a corner I wouldn’t be upset to wear them again.

Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Good And BadThis was a particularly satisfying outfit as it nicely incorporated two elements I’d been really struggling to style – this black and white dress, and my purple tights.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Burgundy Cropped CardiganA great casual outfit, with my favourite part the mixing of patterns with my scarf and striped top.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Almost FavouriteSometimes throwing a bunch of items you really like all together in one outfit doesn’t work so well – but this time I was very pleased with the result.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - White SkirtIt seems so long since I wore a skirt without tights – was that really only a few weeks ago? But I love the softness and balance of this outfit, the loose 3/4 sleeves look great with this summery skirt.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - ChilledThis is not a groundbreaking look, but it feels very “me”. Plus I really love this scarf.

Least Favourite Outfits

Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - Pink And VioletIt was a bit experimental putting the violet and pink together – and it kind of works okay, but I don’t love it.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - TiredPossibly too many colours introduced here, and the neckline is a little busy with the frills and collared shirt.
Quest for a Functional Wardrobe - UnnecessaryIt’s alright, but I generally find a wider belt is more flattering around my waist.
